In 2025, SAATI is financing the creation of an entire 1,000 m² underwater meadow, where today only sediment and waste remain. This isn’t just a gesture. It’s an investment in the future — of ecosystems, of people, of places.
By supporting RE-LAKE, we are putting our commitment to sustainability, community and innovation into action, right in the territory where SAATI was born and still thrives today.
What Is RE-LAKE?
RE-LAKE is an environmental regeneration project born in 2019 and led by Proteus, an Italian research and environmental education nonprofit. Scientifically validated by the University of Insubria, the project introduces a new model for freshwater biodiversity restoration, using 3D-printed, bio-based supports made from lake-sourced organic matter and enriched with biochar — a carbon-sequestering powder produced through pyrolysis.
The project’s success has unlocked funding from the European Union (CNR-SYRENS and INTERREG ITALIA-SVIZZERA) and is now moving from pilot to scalable industrial model.
The Science Behind the Vision
After years of research and testing, RE-LAKE is planting two submerged prairies near Villa Olmo, on the western shore of Lake Como:
- One 500 m² meadow (E.C.H.O.), cross-funded by regional and European institutions
- One 1,000 m² meadow fully sponsored by SAATI
The data speaks volumes:
- Plant growth rate up to 4 mm/day
- Rooting success rate at 85%, far above European benchmarks
- First scientific model of scalable underwater freshwater cultivation
A submerged mesosphere lab has also been deployed for real-time impact monitoring, in collaboration with environmental bodies active across Italian lakes and coastal marine zones.
From Lake to Lab to Life
RE-LAKE is much more than an environmental statement — it’s a collaborative ecosystem:

- Confindustria Como and the Como-Lecco Chamber of Commerce provided early institutional support

Together, these partners make RE-LAKE a model of industrial-regional synergy and an example of how environmental regeneration can go hand in hand with scientific credibility and business engagement.
A Story for the Present — and the Future
RE-LAKE has already reached a wider audience through two major public events in May 2025:
- A business-institutional presentation at Confindustria Como
- A community screening and planting ceremony at Cinema Astra, where the first seedling of the SAATI-sponsored meadow was planted live
These events are only the beginning.
